Luminosity Series: Over the Line
In 2002 I produced a series of paintings examining color relationships using just vertical and horizontal line combinations to establish various rhythms.

These nonfigurative paintings employ wide and ultra-thin straight lines to separate colors and establish intervals. Lines within broader lines set up rhythmic patterns analogous to musical notes. Through the use of repetition the lines establish a visual cadence involving variations in intensity of color establishing something akin to harmonic transitions.

Changes in line width and spatial distance create pulses, a kind of one-two beat that represents the painting's visual "sound" - the sounds of silence.

The paint is applied freehand and consists of several layers of translucent glaze. The surface of the soft-edged stripes are flat or feature a light texture. Some very thin lines are made with colored yarn bonded to the surface with vinyl acryic medium. The yarn provides for fine lines that, depending on lighting and viewing angle, cast shadow lines of there own. The paintings suggest controlled vibrations of suppressed energy, yet there is a serenity about them.
